March 2015

                                    A show stopper

From the pastor:

"Stop!" yelled the rows of people who had experienced homelessness. Or maybe they were homeless still, and would go out into the February night to sleep in the woods. "Stop!" they cried.
They were shouting to stop the action before them on stage, to stop the character Will from blowing a job interview, from fighting with his son-in-law, from taking the drink that would end three months of sobriety.
This was the first edition of Theatre of the Oppressed at Triune, a packed-house, standing-room only event in which our homeless parishioners were invited to participate in the action. Once they'd halted the play, facilitator Carli Gaughf invited one of them to step into Will's place, take the scene in a different direction. Our homeless participants showed how interview skills could be enhanced, how anger could be diffused, how sobriety could be maintained. Empowering lessons, all.
This latest format from our longstanding Playback Cafe, brought to us by the Applied Theatre Center, had its roots earlier this winter. Carli and Playback Director Dale Savidge held three lunch meetings at Triune in which our parishioners told them about life on the streets, the dangers, the tedium, the perils. From that came the original script, which was intentionally stopped in order to provide better solutions.
I call our art, music and theater programs counter-intuitive, in that they are not the first things you might expect from a mission church to the homeless. We are practical, too, in offering hot meals, groceries, laundry services, rehab, social work, legal aid, job coaching, Support Circles.
But to encourage someone to reach his or her potential, you've got to reach the soul as well.
"Stop!" yelled the people marginalized in our society. "Stop! We can offer a better way."

Blessings,
Deb

April 2015

                                     Peace of Triune

(Clockwise from top left, paintings by Charles "Hillbilly" Hester, Charles Anderson, Paul Hansen, Christy Lee Peeks Fowler)

From the pastor:

Charles calls himself "Hillbilly." I try to call parishioners what their mothers called them, but Charles will hardly answer to it. So Hillbilly he is.
Hillbilly is a Vietnam veteran who has been living in a tent in the woods for as long as we've known him. As a veteran, he was eligible for all sorts of help, but for a long time, he refused that help, feeling led, instead, to help other people who were on the streets.
His refuge, he will freely tell you, was our Art Room. In there, he re-discovered a talent for landscapes and seascapes, for animal portraits, for dynamic biblical scenes of paint and plaster.
A local photographer met Hillbilly and posted some of his work on a website. He began getting commissions. This week, he will move into housing.
And still he is in our Art Room every day that it's open.
You will have a chance to meet Hillbilly and many more of our artists when the Upstate Woman's Club hosts Peace of Triune, our third annual art sale April 23 at the Hyatt Regency Greenville. This year's show will be different -- with a live auction, silent auction and raffles for exquisite baskets. It will run 7 to 9:30 PM. We hope you will join us.
* * * * * * *
On Friday, April 17, we will have another fundraiser, a project by local musician Duncan Morrow. The concert will feature four local bands, including bluegrass, Duncan's own rockers, and the always lively Triune Gospel Band.
Our sanctuary doors will open at 6 PM, and the music will begin at 6:30. Admission is free and we will take up a love offering for the ministries of Triune.

          Here's the lineup:
           1) Bootie Cothran and a bluegrass band from First Baptist Greenville
           2) Guitarist/singer Blair Mathis from the Lowcountry, backed by Duncan Morrow
           3) Triune Gospel Band
           4) The Duncan Morrow Band.

Stay for the entire evening or come and go as you please.

                                                                 * * * * * * *

And coming in May: Steve Perone and Friends will hold a luncheon for all of you who have missed a Perone-style deli. On Monday, May 18, 11:30-2:30 PM, you can get Mama Perone's lasagna, salad, garlic bread and tea for $12 to take out or enjoy in our dining hall.
        Come and eat with us!

Blessings,
Deb

May 2015

                               Our 'Whatever' Ministry
Dorene Fridy, Kellie and Charlotte Herlong and their Letters of Love at Triune.

From the pastor:

At Triune, we have programs I call our Whatever Ministries. That means that someone has suggested something, and I have replied, “Yeah, OK, whatever.”
In the summer of 2013, a woman named Kellie Herlong asked if she could bring in stationery during our food distribution days on Wednesdays. She would help people write letters, then she would stamp and mail them.
I asked Kellie, “Do I have to do anything?” She said no. So I said, “Whatever.”
Kellie called her ministry Letters of Love, and soon she expanded to greeting cards. Her friend Dorene Fridy started helping her.
They were incredibly faithful, coming every Wednesday. They offered birthday cards, sympathy cards, get well cards, missing you cards, encouragement cards, Christmas cards, Valentine cards, Easter cards, Mother's Day cards. So far, they have given away or mailed more than 3,000 cards.
And then we began hearing the stories.
A woman who had been in prison for four years took some cards to send to other women in prison.
A woman sent a card to her mother, whom she hadn’t seen in 12 years.
A mother going into rehab sent a card to let her son know where she was.
A lady living on the street sent a card to let her sister know she was alive.
Several people sent thank you notes to doctors or agencies that had helped them.
Then a mother came back to our dining hall to tell Kellie and Dorene that her son had committed suicide in jail. When officers cleaned out his cell, the only personal item they found was the card she’d mailed to him.
I told this story during our worship on Easter Sunday. Then I asked, Is God’s kingdom fully present on this Easter Day of 2015?
Of course not. But do I believe it breaks in occasionally through the faithfulness of people like Kellie and Dorene? I most certainly do.

If you have missed a Perone-style deli since the death of restaurateur Vince Perone, you'll want to come to our fundraising lunch on Monday, May 18,
11:30 AM-2:30 PM. Steve Perone and Friends are cooking Mama Perone's lasagna, salad, garlic bread and tea to take out or enjoy in our dining hall.
There is no program -- just good food for the business community and others on the go. Cost is $12 and tickets are available in our reception office. You can even get 10 for $100. Come and eat with us!

June 2015

                                           Robert-isms

From the pastor:

Robert is one of our most faithful parishioners -- both in church and in the art room. He was living on the street when we met him, but he's been housed since 2012 -- when our first social worker recognized a condition that could get him qualified for disability. He's been doing beautifully ever since, keeping an immaculate house and participating actively in the art room.
At our April auction at the Hyatt Regency, he and professional artist Judy Zeimer contributed a vinyl floor mat with a stunning painting of fish. It sold for several hundred dollars.
But beyond his paintings, Robert contributes wisdom. We call his pronouncements "Robert-isms," and our volunteers keep a running commentary taped to the art room door.
       Here are a few:

       * You think backwards, you go backwards.

       * It doesn't get done looking at it.

       * God takes a bad situation and makes it into a message.

       * A half truth is a whole lie.

       * Listen with your eyes and see with your ears.

       * If you stay ready, you're always ready.

      * People with money have got no time. People with no money have got nothing but time.

      * If it starts with a lie, it ends with a lie.

      * You learn a lot by just being quiet.

Robert doesn't talk to me a lot. He ducks his head and politely murmurs "Pastor Deb" when we pass.
So I was surprised when, on the night of the art auction, he stopped me and made a point of speaking. "I just want you know how glad I am to have Triune to come to," he said. Then he bowed his head, and walked off. Occasionally, I learn a lot by just being quiet.

                                                      * * * * * * *

Thanks to all of you who joined us for our very fun May luncheon catered by Perone's kitchen. Steve and Linda Perone and their volunteers served 396 lasagna lunches, and members of the Hot Notes provided music. We saw a lot of old friends and made new ones.
Steve also convinced us that our fine kitchen is under-utilized. So we have opened it for Monday breakfasts for our homeless population. Harriett and Dennis Dease, Elizabeth Jarrett and other team members who formerly served at John Wesley UMC are preparing this meal, which reached 101 and 71 people on their first mornings out.

                                                    * * * * * * *

Lastly, come and visit us at the Triune tent Saturday, June 6, at Affair in the West End. The festival runs 10 AM to 7 PM. We'll be selling art work and I'll be selling my book, The Weight of Mercy. We'd love to see you.

  Blessings,

   Deb

July 2015

                                There's always a reason

From the pastor:

Our associate director, Pat Parker, is always saying that everyone comes to Triune for a reason -- the homeless, hungry and impoverished for obvious reasons, others, perhaps, for less obvious ones. That extends to employees, volunteers, board members, worshipers, artists, musicians, people living in recovery, visitors.
Everyone, she tells me at least once a week, is here for a reason.
I would have told you that my mother's reason for being here for worship and an occasional Sunday lunch is simply because I work here.
But one night in late June, she, my older daughter and I met for dinner. It was Mom's 84th birthday. The entire family had gathered for a birthday cookout two nights before, so this was just a quiet dinner in a restaurant near her home.
My mom has always been the financial whiz in our family, investing wisely, spending frugally, building principal in her retirement rather than eating into it.
So a little sheepishly, I told her about my plan to sell a car my son left when he moved overseas. I was thinking of paying off my son, I told her, then carrying the financing for a man who was trying hard to change his life.
I expected a frown and an admonition. Instead, she shot back, "If you can help him, you need to. Even if you lose the car, it's the right thing to do."
It was one of those Who-are-you-and-what-have-you-done-with-my-mother? moments.
Pat would just laugh, and tell me God has my mom at Triune for a reason.

                                                        *  *  *  *  *  *  *

The Rev. Steve Doughty, a retired Presbyterian minister and one of our Triune worshipers, has written an exquisite book of story essays, The Man with Six Typewriters ... and Others Who Knew God. The stories are non-fiction that read like fiction, windows into people Steve met during his decades of pastoring. Published by Wipf & Stock of Eugene, Oregon, the slim volume is simply lovely. I've read through it twice, and plan to go back for a third reading of some of the entries. They are that good.
Steve will sell and sign copies of his book at Triune during lunch on Sunday, July 19. You are welcome to join us for worship at 11 AM, then lunch and the signing -- or simply come at 12:30 for the signing.

                                               * * * * * *

I will be a speaker and workshop presenter at the Convocation & Pastors' School at Duke Divinity School in Durham, N.C., Oct. 12-13. Registration is now open for "Body and Belonging: Nurturing Wholeness in Christian Community."

How might the church serve as a place of welcome and belonging, nurturing wholeness in every sense?
How does the church, as Christ’s body, walk with those whose bodies or minds act and respond differently?
How might Christians helpfully engage in practices of modern healthcare?

Join professor John Swinton, Episcopal priest Claire Wimbush, pastor William Lee and me as we explore these topics. If you register by Aug. 2, you'll get early bird pricing.  Here's the link:

August 2015

                                   August Awakenings
From the pastor:

I always think of August as a wilting, and wilted, month. With so many 90-plus-degree days in June and July, August doesn't sound at all inviting.
I hope Triune may change that for you. We are featuring some exciting new things this month, and you're invited to them all.

Monday, August 3 -- Our training for Support Circles will launch, as will our Faith and Finance class:

Support Circles is our year-long program that encircles people who want to emerge from poverty with volunteers like you. Now in its fourth cycle, Support Circles begins with 10 weeks of training, followed by assignment to a Circle. We provide supper and you provide your time, energy, enthusiasm and compassion. Contact Karen Eller at karen@triunemercy.org or 233-8020, ext. 170.

Faith and Finance is our 12-week class that helps low-income people learn to manage their money. We need volunteers to take part in the class and come alongside people as they work the course. Contact Diane Croxton at diane@triunemercy.org or 233-8020, ext. 120.

Saturday, August 8 -- A half-day retreat, Peace Like a River, will offer time for rest and reflection from 9 AM to noon. To be our true selves as God intended, we need to realize our connection to the rest of creation — rivers, mountains, air, animals, plants, people; that is, everywhere God resides and seeks to teach us. Surrounded by the beauty of nature at Furman University, and opening our hearts to the leading of the Holy Spirit through Scripture and meditation, we will learn from conversation, music, art, a walk in the labyrinth, and more.

We will gather at Furman's Chapel, in the lower level Garden Room. Led by Elaine Nocks, Kathy Sharp, Min-Ken Liao and Ben Mullinax, the retreat will bring soul-wellness together with care of the earth in deeply theological ways.
For more information, contact Kathy Sharp at  kathy@triunemercy.org or 233-8020, ext. 108.

Sunday, August 16, 6 PM  -- We are celebrating the ordination of our associate pastor, Karen Eller, with a service preached by Dr. Tom LeGrand.  Tom is the former pastor of Augusta Heights Baptist Church. He now leads the Center for Christian Ethics and Social Responsibility at Gardner-Webb University, and serves as an assistant professor.
We'd love to have you join us as we welcome Karen into the clergy.

In addition, we are trying to beef up our Sunday evening services. On the worship schedule below, take note that our friend, Rev. David Taylor, will close the month. We'll also hear from our own Kathy Sharp, Jerry Hill and Susie Smith.
We hope to see you this month at Triune. We have air conditioning, you know.

 Blessings,

 Deb

September 2015

                                   Music in September
Russ Long, top, Myra Cordell, bottom left, and Elspeth Davis, bottom right.
From the pastor:

Have you ever been to a church service in which the pianist got a standing ovation? Crazy, right?
Well, it happens routinely at Triune when Russ Long completes the offertory with his customary flourish. Earlier this year, parishioner Gene Kendricks became convinced that people were straining their necks trying to see Russ's hands flying across the keyboard. So he built him a piano-shaped platform that raises our grand piano -- and Russ -- several feet above floor level.
In a nutshell, Russ attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music as winner of the 1980 Van Cliburn Piano Scholarship Competition. He then embarked on a career as a concert artist, playing solo and with numerous symphonies. He toured the Caribbean and South America as headline entertainer aboard the Holland America Cruise Line. Most recently, he worked as musical director for Teatro Zinanni, a large theatrical production in San Francisco, and toured as music director for Grammy winners Joan Baez and Thelma Houston.
Back home once more, Russ wants to provide evenings of sacred music for area churches. To give those churches a sneak preview, he will play an opening set at 6:30 PM Sept. 12 before Myra Cordell and Elspeth Davis present Pergolesi's Stabat Mater.
If you've previously heard our operatic friends, Myra, a soprano, and Elspeth, a mezzo soprano, you know what a treat their hour-long program will be. The Stabat Mater is a medieval poem about the suffering of Mary, mother of Jesus. One of the most acclaimed  musical settings is this one by 18th-century Italian composer Giambattista Pergolesi.
Pianist Vance Jenkins and a string quartet will accompany the singers.
You are invited to join Myra, Elspeth, Vance and Russ for this Saturday evening program. Admission is free, and a love offering will be taken for the ministries of Triune.

October 2015

                                       Parking Woes
From the pastor:

If you are a member of one of our serving churches, a member of our Sunday morning congregation, a Support Circles volunteer, or NA or AA participant, you know what a problem parking has become for us.
In a way, it's a good thing: Triune has come to life as a thriving, active church. In another way, it's a bad thing: We watch in trepidation as people on walkers cross busy Rutherford Street and Stone Avenue.

Some time ago, we purchased the adjacent lot on Stone Avenue, intending to pave an additional parking lot. But we've run into problems with the city. To permit us to build this new lot, the city is requiring that we bring our old lot up to current codes. The extra requirements will cost us 10 of the 35 spaces in the old lot. At the end of the project, we would net only 19 spaces for a $177,000 outlay.
We are appealing the decision to the Board of Zoning Appeals at 4 PM October 8 in City Council chambers on the 10th floor of City Hall. We understand that the board pays attention to the number of people who appear in support of an appeal. Therefore, we ask that you come to our aid.
Please join us at the hearing as we request a variance on this ruling.

November 2015

                                       Experiencing God at Triune
     Guest column from a volunteer:

There are many faces represented at Triune Mercy Center. One is a young lady who has no running water for a shower, but she is incredibly creative and artistic.

Another is a married couple with several children, only one of whom lives with them due to past homelessness and other issues.

There is a middle-aged man who was formerly homeless and addicted to drugs, but now maintains housing and has been sober for six years.

Some are Hispanic and have trouble communicating in English.

I know these faces because of my time spent in the Art Room at Triune.

I was introduced to the Art Room a few years ago when I accompanied a group of Sprouts from Buncombe Street UMC on a tour.  An artist myself, I was impressed that there was a space in Greenville for homeless and underprivileged folks to come and use the many donated art supplies -- canvases, paints, colored pencils, ceramics, yarn and more -- to create their own art.

It seemed such a happy and vibrant place to spend time doing what I love.  But I was busy with other endeavors at the time and soon forgot about it. One of these endeavors was a Wednesday morning Bible study I'd been involved with for years. My all-time favorite curriculum  was Experiencing God, which I’ve enjoyed four times with different groups of women.

Two years ago, I was discussing with a friend the upcoming preparations for the year and she told me we were going to study Experiencing God … again.  To my surprise, I was not excited, though I supposed I’d do it once more.

That very week Triune pastor Deb Richardson-Moore was the guest speaker in my Sunday school.  She spoke about the history and philosophy of Triune, and described its ministries -- the hot meals, Support Circles, Playback Café and … the Art Room. The moment she mentioned the Art Room I felt the Holy Spirit move in me. A thought bloomed in my mind, fully formed: Instead of studying how to experience God, why not EXPERIENCE GOD at Triune, in the Art Room!  What a revelation!

I made the call to Marian Dameier, Art Room director, to inquire about volunteering on Wednesdays. She quickly put me to work.  And let me just say that I have never experienced God in a more dynamic and spiritual way than I have during the past year at Triune. I have seen those faces turn to God in many different circumstances.

The talented young lady was attacked while riding her bicycle home from work in the middle of the night. During her lengthy recovery, she continues to have a generous heart and gives away all of her amazing creations.

The couple is successfully caring for their baby. The wife makes sweet love notes for her husband.

The man who lives alone is not lonely at all.  He has many friends and always has a word of wisdom for those he encounters.

And the folks who speak Spanish are quick to interpret when someone new comes to the Art Room.

After spending time at Triune, I am certain the Holy Spirit is alive and kicking in this unsuspecting place. And because of the diversity, I have a much better understanding of what Heaven is like.

Blessings,

Carey Lee Hudson

December 2015

                                           Creative Giving
At left, a Clutter Cross by Lou Ellen Beckham-Davis. At right, "Blanket Scraps" by Linda Pryor.
From the pastor:

People often ask what they can do for Triune. I recommend worshiping and eating and hanging out with us long enough to decide what they want to do. That's how we got the Art Room, Playback Cafe, our legal aid team, photography days and Letters of Love.
It's a way our friends can tap into their own gifts.
Years ago, Lou Ellen Beckham-Davis, a glass artist and member of Buncombe Street UMC, began picking up the scraps in her studio and melding them into cross shapes that she calls Clutter Crosses. She offers them for a donation to Triune and has sent us thousands of dollars raised that way.
Our own Triune congregant Linda Pryor is also a glass artist. At the recent Artists' Open Studios, I happened to be sitting in her studio when someone bought her plate, "Blanket Scraps," for $325. "I'm glad you got to see that," she said. "It was the one I had designated for the proceeds to go to Triune."
This particular piece was made when Linda accidentally broke another work. The glass scraps looked like blanket scraps to her -- like the blankets we give away at Triune. Thus was born "Blanket Scraps," retooled from broken shards.
Not only are these women giving of their talents to Triune, but their gifts carry a message. They are items once broken and discarded, resurrected to become beautiful new creations.
        Now there's a story we've heard before.

February 2016

                                       A Front Row Seat
From the associate pastor:

Triune is one of those places where it’s easy to see God at work — if you’re looking.
One of my favorite areas to see him in action is in our Support Circles ministry.  As a supportive team walks alongside an individual who’s struggling to overcome a challenging life situation, little miracles happen. We love to celebrate the seemingly small victories: another day sober, a new apartment, improved literacy, a first driver’s license, the purchase of a vehicle. Then it’s simply amazing to watch how all these accomplishments build on each other and fuel forward momentum in the lives of our Circle leaders — and their families.
More important than the measurable outcomes, however, are the intangible impacts.  Restored relationships, newfound trust in others, renewed hope and increased self-esteem are all parts of the life transformation in our Support Circles graduates.  One woman has a new-found confidence because of new dentures. One man has new opportunities because he learned to read. But Circle leaders are not the only ones blessed: All the volunteers come away equally changed.
That’s the beauty of doing life together as God’s children.  We focus on encouraging each other along the way as he transforms us all.  The most important thing is that it’s all about relationship.  How wonderful that we each have a front row seat to watch God at work, transforming lives!
The next round of training for Support Circles leaders and volunteers begins February 8. If you are interested in participating, please contact me at 233-8020, ext. 170, or karen@triunemercy.org by February 4.

January 2016

                                       A Pianist's Story
From the pastor:

If you have worshiped with us in the past two years, you know that we have an amazing classically trained pianist in Russ Long. What you may not know is that Russ overcame an addiction, as so many of our people have.
WYFF-TV joined us last Sunday and aired this video:

  http://www.wyff4.com/news/upstate-pianist-using-music-to-inspire-people-fighting-addiction/37151234

As he rebuilds his life, Russ is available to perform concerts and give his testimony at churches.
For a little background, he began playing simple melodies on his grandmother’s old upright piano when he was 4. While still in grade school, he was chosen to participate in the Advanced Program for Gifted Pianists, studying with Sylvia Rabinoff of the Juilliard School and Walter Hautzig of the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
Winner of the 1980 Van Cliburn Piano Scholarship Competition, Russ attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.  After college, he embarked on a career as a solo concert artist throughout the United States and abroad. This became the motivation for his debut recording, Music of the Night, a compilation of classical and Broadway selections.
He has performed with numerous symphony orchestras, including the Charleston Symphony, Florence Symphony, Elgin Symphony, Skokie Symphony and Northbrook Symphony.  He has also toured the Caribbean and South America as a headline entertainer aboard the Holland America Cruise Line.
Most recently, Russ worked as musical director for Teatro Zinanni, a theatrical production in San Francisco.  During this time, he also toured as musical director for Grammy Award winners Joan Baez and Thelma Houston.
Currently, Russ is recording his second CD, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, a compilation of his arrangements of sacred piano favorites.
If your church would like to set up a concert, you may call Russ at 864-498-9558 or email him at iluvapiano@aol.com.
May he bless those of you at our partner churches as greatly as he has blessed us at Triune.

March 2016

                                       Health on Wheels
From the pastor:

For many years our vision for our Wednesday morning food pantry has been that groceries are the least of it.
That has been borne out as many people tell us they're not here for groceries -- they've come instead to see an attorney, a social worker, a mental health counselor. Now they can tell us they've come to see a nurse practitioner.
That amazing development comes as a result of GHS's brand-new Neighborhood Health Partners Mobile Health Clinic. Outfitted with a nurse practitioner who can write prescriptions, a paramedic for emergencies, and business personnel for the necessary administration and tracking, the clinic is scheduled to be in our parking lot two Wednesdays a month. That's necessary to allow a continuity of care and the potential for follow-up visits, according to Lane Chapman, program manager. "We want to ensure we are a dependable presence, without over-saturating the area," she said.
On the launch day in February, the clinic saw nine patients in the first four hours. Lane said they made appointments for some with primary care physicians and others were treated immediately on site.
We are delighted to have GHS join our team which also includes Dr. Darrell Jervey giving eye care through Surgeons for Sight, and a nurse and social worker placed by Bon Secours St. Francis Health System.

************

Genesis 1 reminds us that God gave humanity everything needed for life and entrusted us with the care of creation.  Unfortunately, many of us have drifted into a culture of indifference that uses resources, people and other living creatures in ways that are unjust and unsustainable.
Our challenge is to awaken to the consequences of our actions and provide inspiration to move toward what Pope Francis describes as a culture of care that treasures and protects our interconnected creation.
Toward that end, Triune will host an Earth Week gathering on Sunday, April 17, as our 6 PM worship.
If you would like to help organize this gathering, please contact Susie Smith at 864-634-4205 or susiebsmith@bellsouth.net. More importantly, we hope you will come for the worship service and subsequent discussion.

 Blessings,
 Deb

April 2016

                                       Earth Day, No. 46
Join us for our community-wide Earth Week worship service at 6 PM April 17.
From the pastor:

I remember mentioning Earth Day at a church in the 1980s -- and being accused of Earth worship.
As years have passed, Earth Day has gone more mainstream. Even the most conservative Christians recognize the care of creation as a practical concern. For others of us, it is a spiritual matter -- in that God entrusted us with the care of His world.
Toward that end, Triune will host "Creating a Culture of Care for the Earth, Our Common Home," a community-wide worship service at 6 PM April 17 in our sanctuary.
Come worship with us and hear representatives of Upstate Forever, Mill Community Ministries, the Upstate Chapter of Black Lives Matter, and the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability at Furman University.  These groups are demonstrating that we not only must but can make a difference in the life of our fragile planet.
Come worship with us as we face the reality of a way of life that leads us to believe competition and greed are stronger than cooperation and sharing.
Come and hear guest musician Marlo “Radiant” Hogue, songwriter and performer.
Come and share food, ideas, questions, possibilities and dreams immediately after the service as we approach the 46th marking of Earth Day.

 Blessings,
Deb and service coordinator Susie Smith

May 2016
                              Congratulations to David Gay

                                                Audrey and David Gay
From the pastor:

During Community Law Week at the end of April, the Greenville County Bar Association recognized our David Gay with its Paul Wickensimer Award.
The award honors someone outside the judicial system for contributions to justice in Greenville.
As the seven judges and numerous attorneys who recommended David can attest, that would definitely be him.
For 10-plus years, David has been channeling those with drug and alcohol addictions into rehab facilities all over the Carolinas and Georgia -- more than 1,000 people in all. Not surprisingly, most of them have had run-ins with the legal system. So David visits our jails, follows people to court, talks to probation officers, and otherwise works with attorneys and judges to offer alternatives to incarceration.
One day I visited recently retired Reid Lehman at Miracle Hill's Overcomers program, and he commented, "At our last graduation, David Gay had placed about half the class."
David created his own model -- finding a man or woman a rehab bed, shopping and packing a suitcase full of clean clothes, toiletries and a Recovery Bible, and then, along with his wife, Audrey, hand-delivering them to a facility.
We are so proud that he bases this important work at Triune.

        Blessings,
        Deb

June 2016
                             A graduation present

Our former intern and new Furman University graduate Carryl Tinsley
From the pastor:

You never know who's listening, do you?
That's how I felt when I saw a homeless man's words staring at me in colorful cartoon form on a Furman University web page. I repeat similar words in every speech I give: "The worst thing about being homeless is being looked right through."
But now they were paraphrased on a page devoted to audios from five graduating Furman seniors, one of whom was Carryl Tinsley, a young woman who'd interned with us her sophomore year. Carryl formed relationships with people during that year, learned to see them as individuals with worth and dignity.
As you can hear from Carryl's interview, she got it. She tells about coming back to worship during her senior year and being recognized by a man she'd befriended.
"For my whole life, I've served the homeless," she said, "but I'd never been in relationship with them."
To hear Carryl's short interview, click below and go to "A Presence in Absence."

July 2016
                                   A House for Healing

From the pastor:

During a gloomy and rainy few days in February, women from Christ Episcopal Church and Triune Mercy Center traveled to Nashville, TN, to get a first-hand look at Thistle Farms, a ministry that seeks restoration and healing for sexually exploited and traumatized women. We came home on fire to provide such a ministry in Greenville.
We plan to start with a home -- a comfortable, nurturing home that will provide two years of free shelter, food, counseling and friendship for a handful of women. We hope to eventually go into a social enterprise and all sorts of things. But first, the home.
People ask us a lot of questions -- will the home be rural, urban or suburban? Will the staff live in? Will there be gardens? All that is still under consideration.
Because first, we need the home. Toward that end, we are seeking donation of a house with at least four bedrooms and two baths and/or land somewhere in Greenville County. We're not going to be more specific because we don't want to place limits on your creativity or generosity -- or on God's.
So there you have it. If you have a house or land you'd like to donate, please contact Karen Eller, Triune's associate pastor and co-chair of this project, at karen@triunemercy.org . Or call her at 233-8020, ext. 170.

        Blessings,
        Deb

August 2016
                                         Welcome Home

From the pastor:

You might think that the way to end poverty is to give someone money, the way to end homelessness, to give someone a home. Unfortunately, it's not nearly that quick or that easy.
Our case managers were getting discouraged after assisting people to obtain housing only to see them lose it soon afterward. Our social worker Robin Barton told me, "So many of our folks think getting a place to stay will solve all their problems. But after they get a place and get caught up on sleep, they wake up to find they still have problems and still have mountains of work ahead of them. It can be a scary moment. Some crack under that pressure and turn to addictions, or allow their mental health issues to flare up, or self-sabotage so they won't have to deal with the problems that were under the surface while they were homeless."
To address the problem, she and case manager Kathy Sharp created a monthly Welcome Home support group for newly housed parishioners. Together they talk over the issues -- the isolation that comes once they've left the streets, bill paying, budgeting, the unexpected quiet.
Participants choose the topic for each meeting: This summer, they requested a cooking lesson. Robin and Kathy taught a simple rice dish, and gave out pots and pans to take home.
"They discuss things like 'Now I see why the Rescue Mission made us go to bed early,'  or 'I miss the accountability at the shelter,' " Robin reports. "They speak of not wanting to turn the lights on for too long as they worry about their power bill."
Through lively discussions, participants share as much with each other as the professionals share with them.
Our partners at United Ministries' Place of Hope have joined us. In fact, they've been so pleased with the results that they now require Welcome Home for anyone they help to house.
"Our participants have been very happy for the support," said Robin. "I tell them every time we meet that we dream for everyone to have a place to stay. Their success gives us joy and hope for others to also get housing."

September 2016
                                       A Season of Change
From the pastor:

For years, our rehab counselor David Gay has worked through the Greenville County Detention Center to steer addicts into treatment rather than prison when warranted. While there, he met Beth Messick, who was doing much the same work with women arrested for prostitution. He so admired her efforts that we recently hired her to join our Triune team.
In August Beth received a call from the GCDC about an 18-year-old victim. The young woman had been enticed by a man she met in Tennessee to come to Greenville to meet his family.
Unbeknown to her, she had been “sold” to this man by an alleged friend before they left Tennessee. She arrived in Greenville and realized she was to be sold online for sex. She ran away and called police – and was subsequently arrested for a drug possession.
When Beth visited her, she learned that the teen had lived in 27 foster homes and had been physically and sexually abused in several. As a result of the trauma, she was previously the victim of a trafficker who took her from Tennessee to Wisconsin. That trafficker is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.
The young victim was fearful that the Greenville trafficker would find her once she got out of jail. She had no place to go, no money and no way to get back to Tennessee. Through case management inside the jail and Beth’s intervention, we were able to facilitate a phone interview for her to be accepted into a restoration home in Alabama.
After 21 days in jail, she was released. We provided a bus ticket to Tennessee so she could reunite with some family members until her bed in Alabama becomes available. Beth continues to monitor her and will continue until she goes into the restoration home.
This is new ground for us at Triune, and we are grateful that Beth is showing us the way. Simultaneously, we are working with Christ Episcopal Church to create a restoration house in Greenville for women who find themselves in similar circumstances.
Besides the addition of Beth, lots more changes are happening at Triune. Our longtime volunteer and board member Cheri Shumate has become director of Support Circles and other community-based projects.
And our beloved associate pastor, Karen Eller, is moving to Louisville, Ky., because of her husband's job transfer. We are in the search process for a new associate.
Please be in prayer for us during this time of transition. If you know of someone who would be interested in our non-denominational ministry alongside both homeless and housed, rich and poor, black and white, mentally healthy and mentally challenged, have him or her contact me at deb@triunemercy.org .
You are also invited to join us to say goodbye to Karen at an informal reception in our dining hall at noon on Sunday, Oct. 9.

It's time for our next class of Faith & Finances, a series of 12 sessions on financial literacy for low-income or financially vulnerable adults. If you are struggling with your finances, and seek to overcome financial obstacles, get free from debt and save for the future, please join us on Monday nights beginning Sept. 26 from 5:30 - 7:30 PM in our dining hall. You may also volunteer as a support team member to walk alongside our participants, encourage and assist them as needed.
For more information, contact our Accountant, Diane Croxton, at 864-233-8020 ext 120 or  diane@triunemercy.org.

We are frequently asked when our next art auction will be. It's coming up 7-10 PM on Oct. 20 at a new venue, The Upper Room, 20 N. Main St.
Once again those fabulous ladies of the Upstate Woman's Club are sponsoring "Peace of Triune" that will feature Triune artists as well as local professionals in silent and live auction formats. The event will be catered by Peter Collins, chef at Chef 360.
For more information, contact Carey Hudson at  careyleehudson63@gmail.com  .
